Review passages without changing the accepted text

Attach comments and replies to selected passages. Reviewers can suggest replacement text; editors accept or reject each change. In-editor notices report replies, mentions and review decisions.

Document structure and page layout

Add headings, lists, tables, images and a table of contents. Choose continuous writing or Pages mode with paper size, orientation, columns, margins, headers, footers and page numbers.

References, reusable styles and document files

Sources and references
Add citations, bibliographies, footnotes, endnotes and cross-references when the document needs supporting material.
Reusable formatting
Apply paragraph styles and define custom styles instead of formatting each passage separately.
Existing documents
Import DOCX, ODT, Markdown, HTML or plain text. Word comments and tracked changes can become Magpie comments and suggestions; embedded Word images are reported as import warnings.
A copy to hand over
Export DOCX, ODT, Markdown, HTML or plain text, or download a PDF of Pages layout. A clean DOCX export omits review markup.
Check the structure
The accessibility check identifies issues such as skipped heading levels and missing image descriptions. Review its findings before sharing.
Merge placeholders
Create a new copy by replacing named placeholders with values supplied as JSON.

Named versions and revision history

Save a named version before review or a substantial revision. Restoring it creates a new revision while preserving later history.

Before you share the document

Can I write privately?

Yes. Create the Document in Personal. A Document in a shared team follows that team’s permissions; direct collaborators can also receive access to the individual Document.

Will an imported Word document look exactly the same?

Not always. Imported content can lose formatting, and embedded Word images are not imported. Check the result in Magpie before sharing it.

Do I need Pro to write Documents?

No. Documents is available on Free and Pro. Uploaded images use the account's shared storage allowance: 1 GB on Free or 20 GB on Pro.

What can I edit in the native app?

Edit text, formatting, tables and other supported blocks, change page layout, and import or export document files. The app supports unanchored comments, replies and review decisions. Selecting passages for anchored comments and creating suggested changes requires the website.
